Born 1939 in Penang, Malaysia- Lives and works in Victoria
-Studied painting at Royal Melbourne institute, Sculpture at RMIT, Victoria and completed a BA in English/History at UNE
-Experienced WWII as a child when her father was forced to work on Burma-Thailand railway
-Australian War Artist during Gulf War
-Her works were a personal response to the Gulf War exploring the powerless
position and suffering of the refugees.
The wide media coverage of the Gulf war attracted in the early 1990’s left many
people immune to the images of refugees leaving their homelands, trudging in
long lines, carrying their few possessions with them to seek safety elsewhere-
very similar to current asylum seekers- overexposure in the media (both bad
and good) has left people immune to the images of people- they are no longer
recognized as humans just numbers and money.
